A million horses

Who knew Romania had almost a million working horses? Even though communism was all about mechanization, these horses are its legacy. After the 1989 Revolution the peasants were given back their little plots of land, but soon realized they couldn’t work that land without tractors. So they decided to do it the old way and turned to the reliable horse. Trouble is that during all those years of mechanization, they had forgotten how to look after their horses.

For this reason, The International League for the Protection of Horse (ILPH), a UK charity, is now in Romania working on a 5 year project and spending a million pounds in our country. The ILPH is working at all levels: academic, economic, politic and public. They are teaching Romanian vets how to treat horses better, they are reviving the old trades of farriery and saddlery, they are influencing animal welfare legislation and they are informing the general public about horse welfare.

We started to work for them in January 2006 and I must say I am personally quite fond of this project. It’s my baby. I think its one of our most complete works, as we did all sorts of activities for them: communication strategy, events, media relations, photo, design and print, web design, creative writing. We’ve even started making some short films for them.

I also feel proud of our work for the ILPH, because of its social implications. I think that we can make a difference with this project, because I believe that by helping the horses, you end up helping their owners, the farmers and the peasants. These people rarely get any help at all.

I think in general we are all very motivated by working for a well established British NGO, because the satisfaction of having a good client is doubled by the satisfaction of making a difference.
